What NOT to do as a dermal filler injector

Aspiring Ring cat

At Aspir8, we are passionate about helping injectors to deliver safe treatments. Unfortunately, in the UK there are no legislations or laws to ensure injectors are qualified, experienced and ethical in their approach to treatment. There are therefore a number of injectors out there who fail to meet the standard you would expect from a responsible clinician. With this in mind, we have put together a list of what NOT to do as a dermal filler injector:

Don’t practice without the appropriate qualifications

Injectables like dermal fillers are medical treatments. The face is an extremely complex structure and administering facial fillers takes an enormous amount of skill. Injecting so without the appropriate medical qualifications poses risk to patients and could lead to all sorts of complications.

Don’t forget consent

Obtaining consent from patients prior to treatment is paramount. Consent forms must include an honest account of what to expect and the patient must clearly understand their treatment journey before signing.

Avoid rushing treatments

It takes on average 2 years for a patient to go from considering dermal fillers to sitting in the treatment chair. Treatment is therefore something that must be carefully considered. A responsible injector must be sure to consider all options with the patient, including the option not to have treatment at all. The patient should also be given a cooling off period. The procedure itself should not be rushed and great care must be taken to minimise risk as much as possible.

Don’t be led by the patient

A common difficulty for practitioners is to avoid being led by the patient. As the expert, it is always the practitioner’s job to lead the consultation. A good practitioner will make recommendations based on what will achieve the best results for the patient. Furthermore, if the practitioner doesn’t believe treatment is in the patient’s best interests, they should be honest and open about this.

Don’t skimp on aftercare

Providing the correct aftercare advice to patients is key. After all it is common for patients to worry when faced with usual side effects such as bruising, redness and swelling. It’s important to educate patients prior to treatment as well as offer support post procedure.
